There still hasn’t been a lot of news on Conan the Barbarian (2011), but there has been some news on the merchandizing front. The first can be seen in this snippet from Epic Toon, which discusses an unexpected reveal from the latest Age of Conan newsletter:
“Conan the Barbarian†stars Jason Momoa, of Baywatch Hawaii fame, as the titular hero with the supporting cast made up of Rachel Nichols, Ron Perlman, Rose McGowan, Alana Collins and Stephen Lang. The action-packed film is slated or release on August 19 as part of the summer movie line-up, and should trigger a wave of Age of Conan in-game tie-ins for the latter of 2011.
Funcom is still mum on how they plan to integrate the film’s plot (an original and not a port from previous Schwarzenegger outings) into the game world. New dungeons, items, zones, and maybe even a movie-themed expansion–all these we predict will come rolling out if the movie proves to be a smash hit in the box office. Marcus Nispel, we’re counting on you.
Considering Age of Conan already has a few self-contradictions — from minor ones, like having a quote about Cimmeria being a “treeless land,” to more profound ones, like including the Atlantean sword and Wheel of Pain despite Conan the Barbarian (1982) being incompatible with the game’s backstory — I wouldn’t be surprised to see some little bits from the film make their way into the game. Perhaps players can have their own double-bladed parallel scimitar. But a movie-themed expansion, and integrating the film’s plot into the game world? Shivers down me spine, and not the good kind. I doubt Funcom will go for that, though: I might’ve had issues with their choices, but even they wouldn’t go that far, surely…
