Conan 3D Release Date Announced!

Back to our regularly scheduled news broadcast, Box Office Mojo has announced a release date for Conan 3D!

Mark your calenders, folks, and set aside any plans you might have for…

19th August 2011!

It’s a pretty good date, all things considered. The only competition on that day from the 3D perspective is the Fright Night remake and Spy Kids 4: while some might be undecided on which R-rated 3D movie to watch, I think it’s safe to say Conan and Spy Kids 4 won’t be competing with the same audience. Expect to see a bunch of “which 1980s remake will come out on top” type speculation. A mid-August release also means that Conan won’t be competing with some of the heavier-hitters of 2011 fantasy action like Thor (6th May), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (20th May), Transformers: Dark of the Moon (1st July) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (15th July) or Captain America (22nd July): most of those films will likely have experienced their biggest returns a while before Conan hits cinemas.

As an aside, I love how the reporter for Box Office Mojo seems to think Conan the Barbarian and the original Clash of the Titans had “comparable popularity.” I love Clash of the Titans, but come on now, even if we’re only talking the films, I think Conan has Clash beat, be it in worldwide box office returns, cult following or critical reception.
